UW college of agriculture educators win honors

Wyoming

A group of educators from the University of Wyoming's College of Agriculture have won national, state and campus recognition.

Linda Melcher, director of the Cooperative Extension Service's Expanded Food and Nutrition Education (EFNEP) and Cent$ible Nutrition programs, will receive an award for her work during a March 2 ceremony in Washington, D.C., honoring the 35th anniversary of EFNEP.

She will be one of 24 national recipients of the 2004 "Excellence in EFNEP" awards and will be honored as a "champion" who has made a difference in promoting healthy eating habits. The awards are sponsored by the Cooperative State Research, Education, and Extension Service, the U.S. Department of Agriculture and other cooperative organizations.

Gail Gordon, a CES specialist with the Department of Agricultural and Applied Economics, has been elected to serve as a member of the National Initiative Management Team for the initiative on financial security in later life.

The team will promote the vision of "a nation composed of individuals and families who are financially literate and empowered with the knowledge, attitudes, skills and confidence to practice effective and successful financial management strategies that will ensure financial security in later life," according to Gordon.

She will help coordinate efforts to integrate the initiative with the Small Farms National Program.

Professor Ron Delaney, head of the Department of Plant Sciences, has been honored by the Wyoming Crop Improvement Association as the recipient of a 2004 "Excellence in Service" award. The honor recognizes individuals who have served/supported the Wyoming seed industry.

Associate Professor Karen Williams, head of the Department of Family and Consumer Sciences, has been recognized by the Ellbogen Center for Teaching and Learning as one of eight faculty members who have "developed excellent ways to help students learn."

As one of the center's "We're Impressed!" honorees, Williams, who teaches courses to distance learners as well as students on campus, gave a presentation describing her approach during a lunch gathering.

"I believe that all students, on campus and off, deserve the same high quality educational experience," Williams says. "The same principles of good teaching apply in any environment. I try to create a community of learners in all classrooms."

Williams explains that it is essential to offer personal advising, to create opportunities for student-to-student and faculty-to-student connections, to model authentic learning and assessment experiences and to value students' prior learning.

"Our students are our students whether they are located in Laramie, Worland, Orlando, Swainsboro or Hong Kong," she says.
