Peanut production workshop slated for March 26 in BrownfieldTexas Farmers and agribusiness representatives can update their knowledge of peanut production at a March 26 peanut production workshop in Brownfield. "We will present the latest research information and Extension recommendations for peanut production on the Texas South Plains," said Calvin Trostle, Texas Cooperative Extension agronomist based at Lubbock. "This event is designed to help producers make better peanut management decisions." The workshop is sponsored by Extension, the Texas Peanut Producers Board and Western Peanut Growers Association. The event will run from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Nikki Vinson Youth Center, at the northwest corner of Main Street and U.S. Hwy. 62/82 in Brownfield. The workshop program begins at 8:30 a.m. Topics and speakers will include: --"How a Peanut Plant Grows," Mike Schubert, Experiment Station peanut physiologist. --"Row Spacing, Seeding Rates and Other Planting Tips," Jerry Warren, Extension agent in Terry County. --"Update From Texas Peanut Producers Board and National Peanut Board," Ted Higginbottom, board member from Seminole. --"Plant Disease," Terry Wheeler, Experiment Station plant pathologist, and Chip Lee, Extension plant pathologist at Stephenville. --"Peanut Varieties, Field Performance and Resistance Traits," Mark Burow, Experiment Station peanut breeder. --"Weed Control for Peanuts," Peter Dotray, Extension weed specialist. --"Peanut Irrigation, PET and Water Considerations," Dana Porter, Extension irrigation specialist. --"Fertility and Inoculants," Calvin Trostle, Extension agronomist. Lunch will be provided by the Western Peanut Growers Association and the Texas Peanut Producers Board. A producers' question and answer session will conclude the workshop. Those who attend can earn up to five continuing education units. "Preregistration by March 23 will help us plan the noon meal and ensure that we have enough printed handouts for everyone who attends," Trostle said.
