Yet another wet week for IowaIowa Iowa experienced another week of wet weather during the week ending June 20, which hindered the first alfalfa harvest and spraying of soybean fields, according to the Iowa Agricultural Statistics Service, June 21. Wet weather continued to stress crops in many areas. Operators cited the need for warm weather. There were 3.2 days suitable for fieldwork, compared to 3.5 days the previous week and 5.7 days last year at this time. Topsoil moisture rated 71 percent adequate and 29 percent surplus across Iowa. Subsoil moisture rated 3 percent short, 74 percent adequate, and 23 percent surplus. The corn stand was reported as 94 percent of normal. The average corn height was 26 inches, while the tallest corn height was 36 inches. Corn condition rated 2 percent very poor, 6 percent poor, 19 percent fair, 55 percent good, and 18 percent excellent. Soybean condition rated 2 percent very poor, 6 percent poor, 22 percent fair, 54 percent good, and 16 percent excellent. The oat acreage headed was 81 percent, compared to 54 percent the previous week, and 3 days ahead of the five-year average of 71 percent. Oat condition rated 2 percent poor, 20 percent fair, 62 percent good, and 16 percent excellent. The first cutting of alfalfa was 83 percent complete, compared to 68 percent the previous week and 2 days ahead of the five-year average of 78 percent. Hay condition was 1 percent very poor, 4 percent poor, 16 percent fair, 53 percent good, and 26 percent excellent. Overall, livestock conditions were good. Pasture and range condition was rated 3 percent poor, 15 percent fair, 52 percent good, and 30 percent excellent. Date: 6/22/04
