Wheat production down 5 percent from May forecastKansas The 2004 Kansas Wheat crop is forecast at 351.0 million bushels as of June 1. The current estimate is down 5 percent from the May 1 estimate and 27 percent below the 2003 crop. The current crop is projected to be harvested from 9.0 million acres, down 1.0 million acres from a year ago. Yield per harvested acre is expected to average 39.0 bushels, down 2.0 bushels from the May forecast and 9.0 bushels below the 2003 final yield. As of May 30, Wheat condition was rated 2 percent excellent, 21 percent good, 24 percent fair, 27 percent poor, and 26 percent very poor. Crop progress was about a week ahead of the 5-year average during May, and by May 30, Wheat turning, at 53 percent, was ahead of the five-year average of 31 percent. Disease presence as of the end of May was 63 percent, compared to 58 percent disease presence at the same time last year. The state has experienced temperatures below freezing, scattered storms with hail followed by hot, dry conditions during May. Topsoil moisture was rated 13 percent very short, 32 percent short, 48 percent adequate, and seven percent surplus. Last year, topsoil moisture was 3 percent very short, 14 percent short, 79 percent adequate, and 4 percent surplus.
