Top purebreds exhibited at World Pork ExpoExhibitors at the 2004 World Pork Expo, held June 10-12 in Des Moines, Iowa, more than doubled last year's success, sale averages and temperatures. Bill Funderburg, Greenville, Ohio, judged the Yorkshire show. Dan Baker, West Lafayette, Ind., auctioneered 29 boars averaging $4,572 and 49 gilts averaging $931. Dan Burzlaff, Delmar, Iowa, exhibited the Grand Champion Yorkshire and Overall Top-selling Boar, sired by ARK1 Raw Power 13-4. The boar sold to Top Cut Showpig Sires, Hollansburg, Ohio, for $58,000. Alton Andrews, Cairo, Ga., drove the Reserve Grand Champion and Second Top-selling Yorkshire Boar. The AR2 Barn Burner 241-2-sired boar sold to Prairie State Semen Inc., Champaign, Ill., for $25,000. Grand Champion Yorkshire Gilt and Top-selling Gilt honors went to John Eddie, Storm Lake, Iowa. Eddie's SLI2 Texas Ranger 90-4-sired gilt sold to Ross Hirschfeld & Sons, Benedict, Neb., for $12,000. The Reserve Grand Champion Yorkshire Gilt, shown by Grimm Purebreds, Maynard, Iowa, sold to S&H Swine, Tulare, Calif., for $1,600. She was sired by ARK0 Full Power 46-4. Swine Genetics International, Cambridge, Iowa, accepted the Yorkshire Premier Sire award for their boar RLNY2 Bold Gesture 18-6. SLI2 Texas Ranger 90-4, owned by Eddie-Burzlaff Boar Stud, Delmar, Iowa, claimed the Reserve Premier Sire plaque. Funderburg also evaluated the Landrace show. Howard Parrish, Edon, Ohio, sold three boars averaging $708 and nine gilts averaging $331. The Grand Champion and Top-selling Boar, shown by Cedar Ridge Farms Inc., Red Bud, Ill., sold to Oscar Manbeck, Bethel, Pa., for $975. He was sired by CR1 Sampson 294-1. Reserve Grand Champion Landrace Boar honors went to The Finnish Edge, Woodward, Iowa. Sired by CR1 Karlstorp 438-2, he sold for $350 to Christian Genetics Services, Woodward, Iowa. Funderburg named entry 60-6 from Cedar Ridge Farms Inc. Grand Champion Gilt. Sired by CR1 Sampson 294-1, she sold to S&H Swine for $575. Russell Whewell, Carthage, Ill., bought Behrmann Hog Farm's Reserve Grand Champion Gilt, a daughter of CR0 Samstorp 39-3, for $350.The Premier Landrace Sire award went to CR1 Sampson 294-1, owned by Cedar Ridge Farms Inc. The Finnish Edge claimed the Reserve Premier Sire award with CR1 Karlstorp 438-2. Jerry McLemore, Ninnekah, Okla., judged the Duroc show. Parrish sold 17 boars averaging $3,921 and 26 gilts averaging $843. The Grand Champion and Top-selling Duroc Boar, shown by Center Prairie Genetics, Princeton, Ill., sold to Top Cut Showpig Sires for $42,000. HP2 Capitol 169-4 sired the boar. Kay Christian, Woodward, Iowa, exhibited the Reserve Grand Champion Boar, a son of RWHF2 Xmas 3-2. He sold to Hi Point Swine Genetics, Chrisman, Ill., for $2,200. Lot 97-4, shown by RW Genetics, Bakersfield, Calif., was the Second Top-selling Boar. Sired by RWG3 Structure 8-2, he sold to Casey Olson, Manhattan, Kan., and Stein & Stewart Genetics, Odessa, Mo., for $4,400. Annie Grohmann, Red Bud, Ill., exhibited the Grand Champion and Top-selling Duroc Gilt sired by RWG1 Totally Juiced 134-1. She sold to Kent Brattain, Greencastle, Ind., for $3,500. Justin Rodibaugh, Rensselaer, Ind., showed the Reserve Grand Champion Gilt sired by TYWY2 Red D 11-2. She also sold to Kent Brattain for $3,200. RWG1 Totally Juiced 134-1, owned by Swine Genetics International, earned the Duroc Premier Sire award. Hi Point Swine Genetics' RDMC2 Drastic 2-1 received the Reserve Premier Sire. Jim Grimm, Maynard, Iowa, evaluated the Hampshire show. Kevin Wendt, Green Springs, Ohio, auctioneered 22 boars averaging $2,966 and 23 gilts averaging $837. Earl Cain & Family, Chariton, Iowa, exhibited the Grand Champion Hampshire Boar. The LER2 Rock the House 12-1-sired boar sold to Hoosier State Semen, Farmland, Ind., for $4,700. Reserve Grand Champion Hampshire Boar honors went to Prairieland Genetics, Manhattan, Kan., for their son of JKG2 Ninety Nine Point Nine 54-1. He sold to Power Point Boar Stud, Hurley, S.D., for $12,000. Ledger Swine Farm, Williamsburg, Iowa, sold the Top-selling Boar, a son of BOLN2 Rold Gold 118-1, at $13,000 to Lean Value Sires, New Carlisle, Ohio. Penner Hampshires Inc., Plymouth, Neb., sold their Grand Champion and Top-selling Hampshire Gilt to 3N Farms, Newman Grove, Neb., for $3,400. She is a daughter of JZP2 Canon 7-4. Kyle Kerlee, Salinas, Calif., exhibited the Reserve Grand Champion Gilt, a daughter of WDSF2 The Batchelor 27-8. She sold for $2,500 to Justin Hubly, Clarks Grove, Minn. The Hampshire Premier Sire plaque went to WD Swine Farm, Modesto, Calif., for WDSF2 The Batchelor 27-8. LER2 Rock the House 12-1, owned by Earl Cain & Family, received the Reserve Premier Sire award.
