Teleconference addresses soybean rust issuesNebraska Agribusiness and crop insurance professionals, agronomists and others can learn the issues and facts surrounding soybean rust at a University of Nebraska Cooperative Extension teleconference June 29. Registration for "Soybean Rust: Issues and Facts Teleconference" begins at 8:30 a.m. at the Agricultural Research and Development Center near Mead. The teleconference will be broadcast in several states. University specialists and U.S. Department of Agriculture officials will address the biology, epidemiology and risk from soybean rust; management options; scouting and identification; regulatory issues and sample processing and crop insurance. Soybean rust is a fungal disease that was identified in 2001 in soybean crops in South America. It is expected to occur in the United States in the future. "Soybean rust will eventually occur in Nebraska, but we don't know how soon," said Loren Giesler, university plant pathologist and teleconference co-coordinator. "However, when it does occur, we want to be prepared and catch it early." Soybean rust defoliates the soybean plant and results in reduced soybean yields. The only way to manage soybean rust is to spray fungicides, which are being labeled or will be available with Section 18 emergency use registration in the United States. Certified Crop Advisor credits are anticipated with three in pest management. For more information or to pre-register, call 402-624-8030 or e-mail cdunbar2@unl.edu by June 28. Cost is $25 and includes lunch. Cooperative Extension is in the university's Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources. Date: 6/24/04
