Stay safe out there! With the weather warming up, farmers will be getting back out into the fields. Here are a few tips on how to stay safe during busy times on the farm, brought to you by Farm Safety 4 Just Kids.
Machinery Pinch points should be shielded on farm machinery. If they are not they can pull hands, hair and clothing into the pinch point and the person can be injured. Always replace guards and shields.
Hay Never try to stop a rolling bale, even with a tractor. A bale gains momentum as it moves. You wouldn't try to stop a car free-wheeling down a hill, likewise, don't try to stop a large roud bale.
Ladder safety As you climb, try to keep either two hands and one foot or one hand and two feet in contact with the ladder.
Pickup Surveys show that seat belt usage in rural areas is lower than urban areas, especially among occupants of pickup trucks.
Horse safety Approach a horse from an angle at the shoulder. Speak softly when approaching to let it know of your presence. Horses have monocular vision which leaves them with a blind spot in front of their nose, under their head and directly behind them. Sudden sounds or movements, particulary within these spots, tend to frighten horses.
Machinery safety Modern farm machinery enables farm workers to utilize their brains instead of their backs. It also can be hazardous to the worker if not used properly. Training, experience, and proper shielding are all important to safe operation and avoidance of injuries.
