Some progress on Wheat harvest, but others wait

Untitled

WICHITA, Kan. (AP)--Kansas farmers have harvested about 15 percent of the state's winter Wheat crop, Kansas Agricultural Statistics Service said June 14.

The agency also reported about 64 percent of the crop is ripe.

But the early harvest so far has done little to change the dismal assessment of this year's crop.

KASS rated Wheat conditions June 14 as 44 percent poor to very poor. About 28 percent of the crop was ranked as fair. The remaining 28 percent was in good to excellent shape.

Also June 14, the latest daily snapshot provided by the Kansas Department of Human Resources' harvest offices showed some progress in places missed by recent thunderstorms.

As far north as Hays--where the weather was dry and hot--farmers had already brought in between 85 and 90 percent of their Wheat by June 14.

Comanche County was about 90 percent done with harvest. Great Bend had also cut 65 percent of its wheat, with the Hoisington area 75 percent done. Kiowa County's crop was 80 percent cut, while Ford County was half finished.

The quality and quantity of the early Wheat varied greatly.

Hays was reporting yields of 28 to 35 bushels per acre and test weights of between 57 and 61 pounds per bushel.

In Dodge City, the harvest report showed yields of 20 to 65 bushels per acre, with test weights overall running 54 to 62 pounds per bushel.

Reports coming in from Comanche County show yields ranging from 10 to 50 bushels per acre with test weights of 57 to 60 pounds per bushel.

In the Great Bend area, the average yield was 30 bushels per acre with test weights of 60 to 62 pounds per bushel.

Many other areas were still waiting for crops to dry enough to cut.
