Scott City to host AQHA special eventsKansas American Quarter Horses will take center stage June 26 and 27 at the Scott County Activity Center in Scott City. Produced by Horse Feathers, the American Quarter Horse Association-approved special event will feature halter, reining, working cowhorse classes and a versatility ranch horse compeition. According to the AQHA, horse shows test horses' abilities in dozens of different classes and each division features special classes. The halter classes will showcase Halter Stallions, Halter Mares and Halter Gelding enthusiasts.Within the reining and working cowhorse, division spectators will be amazed at the manuvers the horses are trained to perform--which feature spins and sliding stops. The versatility ranch horse classes challenge ranch horses in five different classes--ranch riding, ranch trail, ranch cutting, working ranch horse and ranch conformation. Ranch classes were born at the request of AQHA members and others who wished for an AQHA-approved event which centered on the talents of a working stock horse, the classes represent daily work on ranches. Versatility ranch compeition is unlike typical horse shows, according to the AQHA. In addition to the emphasis on the verrsatility of the horse, the equipment is different. A good working outfit is encouraged and counts over silver inlayed equipment. Silver on the bridles and saddles is discouraged, as is the trimming of the inside of ears. Hoof polish, braided or banded manes, and tail extensions are not allowed. People who exhibit at an AQHA horse show earn points that turn into awards or cash at the end of the year. By competing at an AQHA show, exhibitors and horses also can qualify for the AQHA or American Quarter Horse Youth Association World Championship shows. Each year the AQHA approves more than 2,700 shows and special events across the globe.
