Rain hinders KS farmers' work weekKansas Heavy showers limited fieldwork to 2.3 days during the week ending June 20 and slowed Wheat harvest in most areas of the state, according to the Kansas Agricultural Statistics Service, June 21. Topsoil moisture was rated 5 percent very short, 12 percent short, 56 percent adequate, and 27 percent surplus. Subsoil moisture was rated 20 percent very short, 33 percent short, 43 percent adequate, and 4 percent surplus. Ninety-two percent of the Wheat is ripe, compared to 43 percent last year and 62 percent for the five-year average. Forty percent of the Wheat has been harvested, 30 points ahead of last year and 18 points ahead of the five-year average. Wheat condition is rated 24 percent very poor, 21 percent poor, 27 percent fair, 25 percent good, and 3 percent excellent. Insect infestation reports indicate 63 percent with none, 25 percent light, 11 percent moderate, and 1 percent with severe infestation. Chinch bugs were the most commonly reported insect. Disease reports indicate 63 percent with no presence, 27 percent with light presence, 9 percent with moderate presence, and 1 percent with severe presence. Eighty-two percent of the soybean crop has emerged, the same as both last year and the five-year average. Soybean condition is rated 4 percent poor, 23 percent fair, 66 percent good, and 7 percent excellent. Pasture and range conditions are rated 18 percent very poor, 24 percent poor, 22 percent fair, 30 percent good, and 6 percent excellent. Feed grain supplies are rated 3 percent very short, 13 percent short, 81 percent adequate, and 3 percent surplus. Hay and forage supplies are rated 3 percent very short, 16 percent short, 75 percent adequate, and 6 percent surplus. Stock water supplies are rated 5 percent very short, 22 percent short, 67 percent adequate, and 6 percent surplus. Date: 6/24/04
