Pressure to reduce fiber contamination
The International Wool Textile Organization claims contamination by dark and coarse fibers is on the rise in Australia, reports the Australian Broadcasting Corp. This is being driven by the use of more exotic sheep breeds.
Woolgrowers are under increased pressure to prevent fiber contamination in their clip with a new requirement becoming effective July 1, at which time producers will be asked to rate the likelihood of their clip being contaminated.
"We want to retain the reputationÉ that Australian wool has for a clean top," stated Ross McEwan, manager of the dark and medullated fiber program.
The cost of dark and coarse fibers in wool processing is estimated by Australian Wool Innovation to be $100 million a year.
