Precip, cooler weather aids crop conditionsMontana There were 5.4 days suitable for fieldwork for the week ending June 20, and during that time precipitation along with the cooler temperatures during the past week has improved crop conditions for all the small grains, according to the Montana Agricultural Statistics Service, June 21. Winter Wheat is 67 percent headed with 1 percent turning color ahead of last year. Spring Wheat emergence is complete, 16 percent boot stage, and 1 percent headed that is below last year and the five-year average. Barley and oats boot stage are progressing well with headed behind last year and the five-year average. Dry beans emergence is complete, and potatoes are all planted with almost fifty percent emerged. Alfalfa and other hay first cuttings are slightly behind last year. Sugar beet conditions continue to improve after poor weather this spring. Corn condition remains below last year and the five-year average. Range and pasture feed conditions fell slightly from last week. Cattle and calves are 93 percent moved to summer ranges, just below the five-year average. Date: 6/23/04
