National youth wool judging contest winners namedTexas Kendall County's senior 4-H wool judges were named the top 4-H wool judging team in the nation during the 44th annual National 4-H Wool Judging Contest here. The contest was held in conjunction with the 67th annual Sonora Wool and Mohair Show June 15-17. The team's score of 1,878 bested the second place Chaves County, N.M., team by 162 points. The Kendall County team members are Kimberly Haile, Kelly Haile, Isaac Miller and Grant Giles. Grant's father, Robin Giles, coached the winning team. Miller, with a score of 640 points, was named the contest's high point individual. The fourth annual National FFA Wool Judging Contest winner with a score of 1,814 points was James Madison FFA of San Antonio. The team consisting of Krista Beicker, Jessica Sierleja, Laura Storms, Lindsey Boyer and Erica Hawks, was coached by Mike Wallace. High individual with a score of 612 points was Krista Beicker. Second place honors in the national FFA contest went to the Artesia, N.M., team. The National 4-H and FFA wool judging contests are highlights of the Sonora Wool and Mohair Show. The show features youth judging contests and wool and mohair fleece competitions in junior and open categories. The event is sponsored by the Sonora Lions Club and Sonora Chamber of Commerce in cooperation with the Sonora Wool and Mohair Company and Texas Cooperative Extension. Date: 6/24/04
