Weather helps fieldwork progressMontana There were 6.8 days suitable for fieldwork for the week ending July 18, according to the Montana Agricultural Statistics Service, July 19. The hot and dry weather during the past week increased crop development and caused slight improvements in crop conditions for the majority of the small grains. Winter Wheat is 70 percent turning color and 1 percent ripe, which is significantly behind last year and the five-year average. Spring Wheat is 95 percent boot stage, and 84 percent headed which is close to the five-year average. Durum Wheat is 74 percent boot stage, and 52 percent headed, which is significantly behind last year due to late plantings, which were caused by the abundance of wet weather. Barley is 98 percent boot stage, 89 percent headed, and 12 percent turning, which is slightly ahead of last year and the five-year average. Oats condition improved slightly this week, but is still below last year and the five-year average. Potato and Sugar beet conditions went down slightly this week, due to the hot and dry weather. Corn condition continues to trail last year and the five-year average. Range and pasture feed condition improved slightly this week with help from the warmer weather. Date: 7/21/04
