Weather helps alfalfa harvest progressKansas Producers averaged 5.6 days of fieldwork during the week ending July 18 with alfalfa cutting the main activity, according to the Kansas Agricultural Statistics Service, July 19. Topsoil moisture was rated 1 percent very short, 16 percent short, 78 percent adequate, and 5 percent surplus. Subsoil moisture was rated 8 percent very short, 27 percent short, 64 percent adequate, and 1 percent surplus. Ninety-nine percent of the Wheat has been harvested, 1 point behind last year and the five-year average. Seventy-seven percent of the corn is silking, compared to 64 percent last year and 69 percent for the five-year average. Eighteen percent of corn is in the dough stage, 8 points ahead of last year and 6 points ahead of the five-year average. Corn condition is rated 1 percent very poor, 4 percent poor, 18 percent fair, 57 percent good, and 20 percent excellent. Ninety-nine percent of the soybean crop has emerged, the same as last year and the five-year average. Sixty-one percent of the soybeans are blooming, compared to 46 percent last year and 49 percent for the five-year average. Fifteen percent of the soybeans are setting pods, 6 points ahead of last year and 2 points ahead of the five-year average. Soybean condition is rated 3 percent poor, 15 percent fair, 67 percent good, and 15 percent excellent. Ninety-nine percent of the soybean crop has emerged, the same as last year and the five-year average. Sixty-one percent of the soybeans are blooming, compared to 46 percent last year and 49 percent for the five-year average. Fifteen percent of the soybeans are setting pods, 6 points ahead of last year and 2 points ahead of the five-year average. Soybean condition is rated 3 percent poor, 15 percent fair, 67 percent good, and 15 percent excellent. Thirteen percent of sorghum has headed, 1 point ahead of last year but 1 point behind the five-year average. Sorghum condition is rated 1 percent very poor, 4 percent poor, 26 percent fair, 55 percent good, and 14 percent excellent. Pasture and range conditions are rated 6 percent very poor, 17 percent poor, 29 percent fair, 40 percent good, and 8 percent excellent. Feed grain supplies are rated 3 percent very short, 12 percent short, 82 percent adequate, and 3 percent surplus. Hay and forage supplies are rated 2 percent very short, 9 percent short, 79 percent adequate, and 10 percent surplus. Stock water supplies are rated 1 percent very short, 12 percent short, 83 percent adequate, and 4 percent surplus. Date: 7/22/04
