Senatorial candidate forum to highlightColorado Colorado Farm Bureau will cap-off its initial policy planning meeting for the year with a Senatorial Candidate Forum on Aug. 3 in Snowmass Village. The Forum will be held in conjunction with Colorado Farm Bureau's Mid-Summer Meeting at the Silvertree Hotel. "This forum is an opportunity for the four U.S. Senate Candidates to express their views on top national issues facing agriculture," said Alan Foutz, Colorado Farm Bureau President. Candidates Pete Coors, Mike Miles, Ken Salazar and Bob Schaffer have been extended an invitation to discuss their views. Attendees will have the opportunity to hear information on a variety of topics that are facing the agriculture community. U.S. Representatives Marilyn Musgrave and Mark Udall (invited) will address the general session on national ag issues. State Senators Mark Hillman (R-Burlington) and Ron Tech (R-Grand Junction) will speak on the state budget situation with the convergence of Amendment 23 and TABOR. Justin Cummings, Esq. will present information on Colorado fence law; James Newberry, Grand County Commissioner, will give an overview of county 1041 powers; and Rick Krause, American Farm Bureau Federation will address endangered species issues and changes to the Endangered Species Act. Advisory committees will meet to discuss issues surrounding trade, marketing, education, farm and environmental policy, land use, water, wildlife and taxation. Resource speakers have been invited by the advisory committees to inform the advisory committees with updates on the current topics facing agriculture. "As Farm Bureau leaders identify important state and national issues, county Farm Bureaus will initiate grassroots policy that will be voted on by delegates at the Colorado Farm Bureau Annual Meeting in November," said Don Shawcroft, Colorado Farm Bureau Vice President and chairman of the meeting. In addition to the advisory committees, the State Women's committee and the Young Farmer and Rancher committee will meet on Sunday, August 2. A dinner will be held for attendees on Monday evening, with the Senatorial Candidate Forum to follow. "This is the first step in the CFB policy-making process where we bring together our county and state leadership to focus on the issues and deliver that information to our grassroots members where they develop policy for Farm Bureau," said Shawcroft.
