OSU Southwest Cattle Conference set for August

Untitled

Oklahoma

Producers can pick up the latest in practical, research-based management tips for cattle operations at the 2nd annual Southwest Cattle Conference Aug. 20.

"Sessions will focus on three key elements: animal management, forage production and figuring out how the cattle market is likely to react over time," said Bob LeValley, Oklahoma State University Cooperative Extension area livestock specialist.

The conference will take place 8:45 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Friday, Aug. 20, at the Great Plains Technology Center, located at 4800 W. Lee Blvd. in Lawton.

There is no charge to attend the conference, which is sponsored by OSU's Division of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources. Registration forms are available through all OSU Cooperative Extension county offices, usually listed under "County Government" in local telephone directories.

"We ask participants to pre-register as soon as possible, to help ensure we provide the proper number of complimentary lunches," LeValley said.

Terry Detrick of Oklahoma Farmer's Union will be a featured speaker, bringing participants up-to-date on the status of the U.S. Animal Identification System.

Mark Gregory, OSU Cooperative Extension area agronomist for southwestern Oklahoma, will lead a session on ways producers can maximize fall forage production and prescription variety selections.

Gerald Horn, OSU animal scientist, will review recent research findings, especially in regard to mineral supplementation, the use of ionophores and Wheat pasture bloat.

OSU Veterinarian Dr. John Kirkpatrick will review methods to identify sick cattle early enough to get the most benefit and cost effectiveness from treatment protocols.

Derrell Peel, OSU Cooperative Extension livestock marketing specialist, will discuss the current market situation and outlook, focusing on Wheat pasture stocker cattle.

Anyone interested in obtaining additional information about the Aug. 20 conference should contact LeValley at 580-255-0546.
