K-State Animal Science names Swanson as interim department headJanice Swanson has been named interim head of Kansas State University's department of animal sciences and industry, effective Jan. 1, 2005. She will move into the post that current department head Jack Riley has held for 17 years. Riley announced earlier this year that he will continue to work in the department during a five-year, phased retirement program after the Jan. 1 changeover. "Dr. Swanson is an outstanding choice as interim department head in this significant program at Kansas State University," said K-State Provost Duane Nellis. "I believe she has the leadership skills to move the animal sciences and industry programs forward on numerous fronts." Riley said, "Dr. Swanson has established a strong national and international reputation and was destined to be recruited as an administrator in one of the major animal sciences departments or colleges of agriculture in the U.S. This will give her an opportunity to exhibit those leadership talents in one of the premiere departments in the land-grant system." Fred A. Cholick, dean designee for the College of Agriculture and director designate for K-State Applied Research and Extension, said he is looking forward to working with Swanson and is confident she will lead the department to an enhanced level of excellence. "I'm looking forward to working with our department as we develop a strategic plan," Swanson said. "As part of that effort, I'll be speaking with both internal and external stakeholders." On faculty at K-State since 1992, Swanson has been associate director and director of the department's International Meat and Livestock Program. She has authored or co-authored numerous publications, including the recent "Handling Cattle at the Plant" and "Beef Cattle Transport," both co-written with K-State animal scientist Michael Dikeman. Prior to coming to K-State, Swanson was a technical information specialist with the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Animal Welfare Information Center. Swanson earned bachelor's and master's degrees in animal science at the University of Connecticut. She received a Ph.D. in animal science with a focus on applied animal ethology from the University of Maryland in 1988. Date: 7/22/04
