Harkin announces nearly $2 million for Iowa State university biomass projectIowa Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA), ranking Democrat on the Senate Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry Committee, July 16 announced that Iowa State University would receive nearly $2 million from the Department of Agriculture (USDA) to fund a biomass research project. The funds are part of USDA and the Department of Energy's (DOE) Biomass Research and Development Initiative. "Developing methods to convert biomass into energy is critical to increasing the availability of and our reliance on renewable sources of energy," said Harkin. "Iowa State has long been a leader in this field and these funds will help them continue to be the gold standard." The funds announced today flow from resources provided by Harkin and Senator Richard Lugar (R-IN) in the 2002 farm bill. The senators extended and provided funding for the Biomass Research and Development Act of 2000 in the farm bill. "Working with my colleagues, we set in motion the machinery to develop new and renewable sources of energy," said Harkin. "Utilizing our biomass resources will benefit traditional commodities, such as corn, while creating new markets for crops produced by America's farmers. Biomass development is a can't miss for farmers, rural America and the environment." The funds are part of a $25 million announcement by USDA and DOE. Coupled with cost sharing by private partners, the total funds available approach $38 million. Date: 7/21/04
