West Plains regional cattle salesThe Ozarks Regional Stockyard, West Plains, Mo., reported receipts of 4,000 head Jan. 13, compared to 1,406 head last week and 4,712 head last year, according to the to the USDA Market News Service, Jefferson City, Mo. Compared to last week, steers and heifers sold $4 to $8 higher, with 450- to 550-pound calves as much as $10 higher. Supply was moderate, with the majority carrying more fill and generally not as attractive as last week. Demand was very good. Compared to last week, early Kansas sales were $2 to $3 higher; later were $3 to $4 higher. Texas, the Oklahoma Panhandle and Nebraska live sales were $3 to $4 higher when compared with last week, while dressed sales in Nebraska were $4 to $6 better when compared with last week. Boxed beef prices continue upward on fairly good demand with Choice 600 to 900 pounds up $2.88 at $134.35 and Selects weighing 600 to 900 pounds were up $2.91 at $126.73. Corn futures were no help to the feeder cattle futures however, as the grain market moved higher on the board again, following the somewhat bullish grain report. The supply included 47% steers and 53% heifers. Nearly 33% weighed over 600 pounds.
