U.S. Wheat sold to IraqDES MOINES (DTN)--Thirty-two thousand metric tons of U.S. Wheat will be delivered to Iraq in early 2004, under arrangements completed between the UN World Food Program, the Iraqi Ministry of Trade and AMEROPA, an international grain and fertilizer trading company, according to a press release from AMEROPA. This sale represents the first commercial export of U.S. Wheat to Iraq in over six years, the company said. The company originally had a UN Oil-For-Food contract to provide Russian wheat. However, delivery of that Wheat was delayed by the events of Operation Iraqi Freedom. When renegotiating the contract, AMEROPA proposed to substitute high quality U.S. hard red winter Wheat for the remainder of the contract deliveries. AMEROPA said this sale may seem small in comparison with Iraq's Wheat import requirements of two million tons annually, but it is symbolic of Iraq's return to a competitive world market--which should enable U.S. farmers to compete for Iraqi contracts in the months and years ahead. Alan Lee, chairman of U.S. Wheat Associates, said Iraq is going to be a very important market for U.S. Wheat and this sale is just the beginning. Date: 1/15/04
