U.S. Wheat export sales up 36% over same time last yearThe latest export sales report, issued by the U.S. Department of Agriculture on Dec. 29, shows that the demand for U.S. Wheat remains strong around the globe. Total sales to known and unknown destinations are at 22.6 million metric tons, compared to 16.6 MMT at the same point last year. Of special note is Cuba's presence, for the first time, in the list of the top 15 customers of U.S. wheat. Many major customers have increased their purchases over last year. The top 15 customers, ranked by sales since June 1, are: 1.) Egypt (2.94 MMT, up 243%); 2.) Japan (2.26 MMT, even with last year); 3.) Mexico (1.87 MMT, up 2.4%); 4.) Nigeria (1.74 MMT, up 24%); 5.) Philippines (992 TMT, down 27%); 6.) Korea (961 TMT, down 8%); 7.) Italy (795 TMT, up 51%); 8.) Taiwan (638 TMT, up 12%); 9.) Venezuela (571 TMT, up 48%); 10.) Colombia (567 TMT, down 5%); 11.) Peru (565 TMT, up 56%); 12.) Spain (484 TMT, up 393%); 13.) Brazil (474 TMT, down 28%); 14.) China (400 TMT, up 505%); and 15.) Cuba (365 TMT, up 583%). Date: 1/2/04
