U.S. senator, Farm Bureau leader earn awards

Former long-time Texas Farm Bureau President S.M. True, Jr. and Sen. Christopher "Kit" Bond (R-Mo.) were honored Jan. 12 for their commitment to agriculture at the American Farm Bureau Federation's annual meeting. True and Bond earned AFBF's prestigious Distinguished Service Award--the highest honor awarded by the organization.

True, president of the Texas Farm Bureau from 1982 through 1993 and a past member of the AFBF Board of Directors, is known for his ability to build consensus. He successfully positioned his organization as the leader of a formal Texas agricultural coalition. True was an exemplary leader during his service to both the Texas Farm Bureau and AFBF. His farm and ranch operation is located in Hale County in West Texas.

Bond, a sixth generation Missourian, has served his state in the U.S. Senate since 1986. He graduated from Princeton University in 1960 and received his law degree from the University of Virginia, having graduated first in his class. He has also served as governor of Missouri - the youngest in history when first elected at age 33.

Bond is known as a faithful advocate for agriculture in the Senate. He is a supporter of developing value-added opportunities for farmers and ranchers and is a strong backer of opportunities offered by agricultural biotechnology. Bond is a past recipient of AFBF's Golden Plow award and a four-time designee as a Friend of Farm Bureau.

AFBF's Distinguished Service Award is presented to individuals who have devoted their entire careers to serving farming and ranching, and who continue to display a concern for the agricultural industry.
