Watson named 2003 arborist of the yearTexas Dr. Todd Watson, assistant professor in the Texas A&M University department of forest science, was named the 2003 Arborist of the Year at the annual Texas Tree Conference. "It's the most prestigious award that (the Texas chapter of the International Society of Arboriculture] gives each year," said Watson, adding it was an honor to receive this recognition from his peers. John Giedraitis, board member of the International Society of Arboriculture Texas Chapter, said Watson was unanimously selected for the honor. "(Watson] was a clear favorite for this award," Giedraitis said. "His research and support of the (International Society of Arboriculture] made him an excellent candidate." In the past year, Watson has researched better ways to get rid of the parasite mistletoe, studied the way communities in the South view trees, and determined how porous asphalt can better help trees survive urban sprawl. He has also made significant academic contributions to arboriculture, Giedraitis said. "During his short time at Texas A&M, (Watson) has done a great job developing curriculum and teaching urban forestry and arboriculture," he said. "Also, (Watson) has done a great job engaging graduate students in the field of arboriculture." He joined the faculty at Texas A&M in August 2001. Giedraitis said Watson is also an active member of the Texas chapter of the International Society of Arboriculture. As a member, Watson hosted a tree roots workshop that was attended by arborists from across the state. Through the workshop, he was able to raise money for a scholarship fund for future arborists. "This award is really a way to recognize Dr. Watson's leadership, to thank him, and to tell other people that he is a great guy," Giedraitis said.
