Vet lab in Center movingto new state-of-the-art quarters Texas The Texas Veterinary Medical Diagnostic Laboratory in Center will be moving to new offices. Dr. Lelve Gayle of College Station, TVMDL director, said the open house for the new 3,500-square-foot facilities will be at 2 p.m. on Feb. 24. The Texas Poultry Federation is sponsoring the open house at the new lab at 635 Malone Dr. About 150 elected officials from Shelby and surrounding counties and the leadership in the poultry industry have been invited. The TVMDL, which is headquartered on the campus of Texas A&M University, has had offices in that area since the 1950s. It presently occupies a house that was built and donated by the residents of Shelby County. Funds for the new lab were furnished by the state legislature. "This is truly a laboratory of state-of-the-art equipment," Gayle said. Such labs are important because the mission of the TVMDL is to diagnose animal diseases present in the United States. "More importantly, we will be doing surveillance in Texas for those diseases that aren't presently in Texas, like Exotic Newcastle Disease and Avian Influenza," he said. Last year's outbreak of END in California cost $50 million to eradicate, an amount that does not count trade losses, Gayle added. Date: 2/19/04
