UW livestock judging team wins awardsWyoming The University of Wyoming livestock judging team has picked up several top finishes and gained experience during February competitions in Iowa and South Dakota. Ryan Ford of Cheyenne, a finance major, won the high overall individual award at the Sioux Empire Farm Show in Sioux Falls, S. D., placing first in swine judging and second in oral reasons. Animal and veterinary sciences major Lacey Green of Craig, Colo., was the high individual winner in sheep judging and earned the seventh spot overall. J.D. Sexton of LaPorte, Colo., an animal and veterinary sciences major, finished third in sheep and ninth in cattle judging. He also won eighth place in oral reasons. The team as a whole finished fourth out of 12 teams, winning second place in both sheep and swine judging and fourth in oral reasons. At the Iowa Beef Expo in Des Moines, the UW students won seventh overall in a field of 15 teams and 69 competitors. The Laramie group won fifth in oral reasons and ninth in placings. Individually, Ford scored eighth in placings and tenth overall. Sexton earned the eighth spot after tie-breakers (he originally tied for fifth) in oral reasons and was 16th overall. Coached by Lance Miller of the department of animal science, the students studied and placed 12 different classes of beef cattle, sheep and swine during the contests and then presented detailed oral reasons justifying their choices on eight of the classes during the Sioux Falls contest. At the Iowa event, contestants judged 10 classes of beef cattle, filled out a sire summary quiz and gave six sets of oral reasons. The group will travel next to Texas to compete at the Houston Livestock Show on March 15. Team members will vie in four more contests in the fall of 2004, leading to the national finals for the top five students in November in Louisville, Ky. Date: 2/18/04
