Youth compete in Oklahoma Farmers Union state speech finalsOklahoma Young people recently competed in the 60th annual Oklahoma Farmers Union state speech finals on Dec. 4, at Oklahoma State University in Stillwater, Okla. More than 160 speakers previously placing first or second in their respective district contest were eligible to compete in the state finals for plaques and U.S. Savings Bonds up to $500. This annual fall contest attracted more than 500 contestants statewide. All speeches focused on the theme, "How My Organization Promotes Good Community Living." Categories included Farmers Union, conservation, farm services, rural utilities and student organizations. This year's state speech contest winners were: OFU category: Kasey Campbell, Haworth, novice; Tyler Sturgeon, Ripley, junior; Mason Jones, Calera, intermediate; Heath Burchfield, Fairview, senior; Conservation category: Paige Sullivan, Prague, junior; Cody Ott, Fairview, intermediate; Travis Schnaithman, Garber, senior; Student Organizations category: Kylee McMullin, Kingfisher, junior; Martha Bullington, Hollis, intermediate; Laila Hajji, Guthrie, senior; Farm Services category: Abby Briscoe, Kingfisher, junior; Nikki Holt, Kingfisher, intermediate; Sara Wittrock, Kingfisher, senior; Rural Utilities category: Madison McGolden, Fairview, junior; Regan Prescott, Depew, intermediate; Brendon Lowe, Chickasha, senior. Tournament of Champions winners were: Clark Bixler, Waynoka, Division I; and Katie Gruntmeir, Kingfisher, Division II. "Effective communication is a key element in all leadership roles. Oklahoma Farmers Union is extremely proud to offer opportunities such as this contest to Oklahoma's young people who will lead our organizations, communities, state and nation in the future," said Shelly Bilderback, OFU director of youth and education. Oklahoma Farmers Union, a general farm organization, is celebrating its centennial in 2005 with more than a century of service, representing more than 100,000 family memberships across the state. OFU provides educational opportunities, supports cooperative development ventures and serves as the voice of family farmers and rural Oklahoma in policy development on local, state and national levels.
