Wall man named Cattleman of the YearSouth Dakota Myron Williams of Wall was named Cattleman of the Year at the recent South Dakota Cattlemen's Association annual convention in Aberdeen. Williams, who has made significant contributions to the beef industry, runs a cow/calf operation and backgrounds cattle in partnership with his two sons, Monty and Marty. "I like doing business with someone of his caliber," said Shorty Jones, a member of the SDCA, who has worked with Williams in many different capacities. "I was really pleased that he was honored in that way." Williams received the award at the evening banquet, part of the Dec. 1 and 2 convention that brings cattlemen and industry representatives from across the state together. The award recipient was nominated and then selected by his colleagues in a committee meeting. "He's more of the leader type than the follower type," said Jones, whose point is illustrated by Williams' long list of involvement. He is a seven-year member of the SDCA and has served on the South Dakota Beef Council for eighteen years. He is a two-time director of the Black Hills Cattlemen's affiliate, where he is now serving as the vice president. Currently he is the vice president of the National Cattleman's Beef Association Federation Division. Williams was elected to the National Livestock and Meat Board in 1994. He previously served a three-year term on the U.S. Meat Export Federation and has been a director on the NCBA Board since 1996. Williams is equally involved outside the beef industry. He was a director of the Central States Fair Board and was on the Wall School Board for six years. A church council member and past director of the High School Rodeo Board, Williams is also a director for the Public Lands Council. "It's an honor to be recognized for the things you do," said Williams, commenting that he was very surprised. "It's much appreciated," he said. A graduate of South Dakota State University, Williams and his wife, Mary, ranch near Wall. They have three grown children.
