Potato production down in North DakotaFARGO, N.D. (AP)--Potato production in North Dakota dropped 2 percent from last year to 26.8 million hundredweight, despite a record average yield, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said Dec. 15. The drop in production was the result of 10 percent fewer planted acres and 10 percent fewer harvested acres this year, the state Agricultural Statistics Service said. The average yield was a record 265 hundredweight per acre, up from 245 last year. Since 1993, production in the state has ranged from 21.1 million hundredweight to 28.8 million. Production of fall potatoes nationwide was estimated at 410 million hundredweight, unchanged from a year ago. In North Dakota, russet potatoes accounted for about 56 percent of production. Whites made up 29 percent and reds 15 percent. The Agriculture Department said North Dakota growers, dealers and processors had 19.6 million hundredweight of potatoes in storage on Dec. 1, up 1 percent from last year. Nationwide, the 15 major potato-producing states held 272 million hundredweight in storage, also up 1 percent from 2003. Date: 12/22/04
