Pawnee FFA takes top honors at state cattle handling competitionOklahoma On July 14, Pawnee FFA qualified two of their Livestock Handling Teams for the State Competition. Both teams took a Cattle Handling Test at Oklahoma State University during the OSU Beef Field Day. The two teams who qualified were, The "Girls" Team, Cara Buchanan, Megan Bryant, and Andy Gilliland and The "Boys" Team, Cole Buchanan, Lee Martin, and Michael Spears. The two teams attended the 11th Annual Tulsa Farm Show on Dec. 9 and 10 to compete in the State Competition. The teams made presentations with poster boards and PowerPoint. The girls did their presentation on "Types of Cattle Identification" and the boys did theirs over "Darting in Cattle". On Dec. 10, the two teams along with seven others were able to show off their cattle handling skills by working two calves supplied by Joe Don Eves owner of the Tulsa Stockyards. They administered vaccines, Ralgro, ear tags, wormed, and checked the temperature on the cattle. The teams were judged on their test scores, presentations, and their handling skills. The "Girls" Team of Cara, Megan, and Andy placed first and won the State Competition, followed by the "Boys" Team of Cole, Lee, and Michael placing second. The two Pawnee FFA teams won scholarships, trophy buckles sponsored by Tulsa New Holland, and were presented with team plaques.
