Northeast Nebraska to host 10--$20 workshopsNebraska A new workshop "10 easy ways to boost profit by $20 per acre", will make its debut at twenty locations across the eastern half of Nebraska this spring, including: --Jan. 12 in Neligh, Neb., from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the basement of the Antelope County Courthouse; --Feb. 11 in Hartington, Neb., from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the City Auditorium Basement; --March 11 in Columbus, Neb., from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Ag Park Starting Café; --March 23 in Stanton, Neb., from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the V.F.W. This program, featured on the cover of the November 2004 Nebraska Farmer, is a compilation of common sense farming practices that are proven by field research but not yet universally adopted by farmers. A notebook containing over 20 papers submitted by Extension specialists and educators statewide on various profit-boosting practices has been assembled for this workshop. Host Extension educators select ten topics that fit the needs of his/her local area to be presented live in a particular workshop location. Specific topics include: Eliminating on field operation; No-till in dryland cropping systems; Switching to no-till can save irrigation water; Credit soil for nitrate nitrogen; Credit soil organic matter for nitrate; Eliminate unnecessary use of P, K and S fertilizer; Giving proper credit for legumes in corn rotations; Use of corn and soybean rotations; eliminate use of inoculants where fields have a history of beans; Watching the weight of soybean seed; Setting realistic yield goals; Improve efficiency of the pumping plant; Generic products versus name brand products; Eliminate routine treatment of wireworm; Selecting resistance in soybean varieties to combat diseases; Lease and share of machinery resources; Harvest soybean at 13 percent moisture; and Using on-farm research to see what works for you. Program fees are $20 for one person or $30 for two people from the same farming operation. Fees include one notebook per operation, lunch and refreshments. Pre-registration is required.
