Newell sheep sale news

St. Onge Livestock Co., Ltd., Newell Sheep Yards, Newell, S.D., reported receipts of 2,402 head Dec. 16, compared to 1,089 head last week and 741 head last year, according to the USDA Market News Service, Sioux Falls, S.D.

Compared to last week, feeder lambs offered in larger drafts sold $1 to $3 higher. Good and Cull slaughter ewes sold $2 to $4 higher and Utility ewes sold steady to strong. Buyer demand was good to very good for all classes of sheep. Receipts were about 64% feeder lambs, 23% slaughter ewes, 6% replacement ewes and the balance was bucks, miscellaneous sheep and goats. The next sheep sale will be January 6, 2005 and will be a feeder lamb special.

Feeder lambs: Medium and large frame 1 and 2, 5 head, 47 lbs., 152.00 thin; 9 head, 53 lbs., 138.00; 65 to 67 lbs., 136.50 to 139.00 (137.41); 72 to 77 lbs., 135.25 to 138.00 (136.41); 85 to 86 lbs., 131.25 to 132.25 (132.13); 92 to 98 lbs., 117.75 to 121.50 (118.38); 15 head, 97 lbs., 114.00 fleshy; 7 head, 93 lbs., 112.00 Burry; 105 to 107 lbs., 115.00 to 117.50 (117.29); 41 head, 117 lbs., 107.75 fleshy; 120 to 127 lbs., 93.50 to 98.00 (97.47). Medium frame 1 and 2, 16 head, 73 lbs., 131.50; 62 head, 96 lbs., 111.00.

Slaughter lambs: Wooled, 21 head, Choice, Yield grade 2 and 3, 140 to 143 lbs., 89.00 to 90.00.

Slaughter ewes: Wooled, 157 head, Good, Yield grade 2 to 3, 155 to 175 lbs., 50.00 to 51.75; 41 head, Good, Yield grade 2 to 4, 197 to 213 lbs., 45.50 to 46.00; 176 head, Utility, Yield grade 1 and 2, 148 lbs., 52.00; 119 head, Cull, Yield grade 1, 128 lbs., 52.25.

Replacement ewes: Medium and large frame 1 and 2, open whiteface, 163 head, 5 years old, 160 lbs., 104.00; 12 head, 5 years old, 137 lbs., 89.00.

Aged bucks: 37 head, fleshy, 240 to 249 lbs., 34.00 to 37.00.
