Texas's Mason McClintock hales as champion senior showmanTexas The showmanship competition at the 2004 Junior National Hereford Expo (JNHE) in Tunica, Miss., proved to be the toughest of the weeks activities. There were more than 450 participants in the showmanship competition split between four divisions. Kyle Colyer, Bruneau, Idaho, evaluated the senior and intermediate divisions while Bob Goble, Alto, Mich., sorted through the junior and peewee competitors. In the senior division, not only are the exhibitor's showmanship skills tested, but also their ability to get the animal ready for the show. Once the seniors are narrowed down to the top 13 finalists, they bring their cattle and fitting equipment into the ring and fit their animal while the judge evaluates their fitting skills. When all was said and done Mason McClintock, Fort McKavett, Texas, came out as champion. In this year's contest there were seven heats of senior showmanship with 74 total contestants. Colyer selected finalists from each of the heats to come back for the semi-final round before narrowing the field down to the top 13. Mason McClintock is the 18-year-old son of Mark and Teresa McClintock. McClintock grew up on the Rocking Chair Ranch near Fort McKavett, Texas, with his older brother Ryan. Mason and the Rocking Chair crew are no strangers to the show ring. He has been showing Herefords and competing in Texas and national Hereford shows since he was eight years old. The intermediate division consisted of 13 heats, with exhibitors ranging in age from 14 to 17.
