Ranch roping finals at NILEThe Finals competition of the Northern Range Ranch Roping Series (NRRRS) will once again be a featured event at the NILE Stock Show, ProRodeo and Horse Extravaganza in Billings, Mont. The Ranch Roping Finals is set for Saturday, Oct. 16 and will be held on NILE grounds in the Superbarn at MetraPark. Some of the top ranch ropers in the nation will compete, having earned the honor by placing high in one or more of the 13 preliminary events held by the Series this spring. The top three teams from each sanctioned roping automatically qualified for the Finals. This year, ropers have qualified from as far way as Oregon and Texas. The NRRRS promotes low-stress roping using a variety of functional and sometimes fancy loops, with emphasis on proper horsemanship and stockmanship. It is a family sport, with NRRRS ropers ranging in age from eight to mid-60s. The NRRRS was born in Montana in 1999 and its credibility and popularity has risen rapidly. Reportedly, the NRRRS rules have been adapted by similar organizations in other western states, the midwest and Canada. In 2000, the organization teamed up with the NILE to host the Finals competition. The partnership has continued, with the Ranch Roping Finals now an anchor event of the NILE Horse Extravaganza. The NRRRS Novice Finals is scheduled for 8 a.m. Saturday morning, with the Open Finals in the afternoon. Admission is free to the public. More information is available online at www.ranchroping.com.
