Nonfat dry milk available for producers

New Mexico

The New Mexico Department of Agriculture, in cooperation with the New Mexico State University Cooperative Extension Service, will help distribute 14.2 million pounds of nonfat dry milk (NDM) to livestock producers in eligible counties in New Mexico. The NDM is available for foundation and feeder beef cattle, bison, sheep, and goat owners in Colfax, Dona Ana, Grant, Hidalgo, Los Alamos, Luna, Mora, Rio Arriba, Sandoval, San Miguel, Santa Fe, Sierra, and Taos counties.

The NDM is being distributed as part of the United States Department of Agriculture 2004 Livestock Feed Initiative. This drought assistance program offers ranchers powdered milk currently stored by the federal government to be used as a supplement in their feeds. "USDA is providing an excellent resource to assist ranchers and producers in drought stricken counties," says Dr. Miley Gonzalez, Secretary of Agriculture. "The drought has been difficult for ranchers to endure and the NDM will help to maintain their herds," he adds.

Eligible producers will receive a voucher, which may be exchanged for feed with a participating feed manufacturer or dealer. The producer may incur costs relating to the delivery, unloading, and reloading and associated expenses necessary to the placement of the NDM or feed into the hands of the producer. Ranchers can also elect to exchange the voucher for NDM from a willing feed manufacturer.

Livestock owners can pick up an application packet at the local county Extension service office in eligible counties or on the Internet at www.nmda.nmsu.edu. A self-certification document and the producer acceptance form must be completed and returned to the local county Extension office by 4 p.m. on September 10, 2004. Producers in Dona Ana County can deliver the documents to NMDA at 3190 South Espina Street on the campus of NMSU or the county Extension service office.

Questions about the program can be directed to NMDA at 505-646-5152 or your county Extension agent.
