NDA reminds producers of nonfat dry milk program deadlineNebraska The deadline is approaching for producers to register for the 2004 Nonfat Dry Milk (NDM) Livestock Feed Initiative. Nebraska Department of Agriculture Director Merlyn Carlson on Aug. 23 reminded livestock producers in western Nebraska that herd self-certification forms are due in the office, or must be postmarked by, Wednesday, Sept. 1, 2004. "Producers of beef cattle, sheep, goats and bison who have not yet registered their foundation herd numbers should do so as soon as possible," Carlson said. "Because we have a limited supply of nonfat dry milk this year, we will need to enforce the Sept. 1 deadline. However, we want all qualified producers to be able to access the program, so I am hopeful that producers will turn in their herd self-certification forms soon." The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), in conjunction with the Nebraska Department of Agriculture (NDA), is making excess stocks of nonfat dry milk available to drought-stricken Nebraska producers for use in their livestock feed rations. Using the U.S. Drought Monitor as a guide, USDA selected Banner, Box Butte, Cheyenne, Garden, Kimball, Morrill, Scotts Bluff and Sioux counties for the program. Producers of beef cattle, sheep, goats and bison are eligible for the program if they have a mailing address within one of these eight counties or if most of their livestock operation is primarily located in one of these counties. Specific qualification guidelines can be found at www.droughtcentral.org in the 2004 Livestock Feed Initiative Question and Answer document, or call the Department at 800-422-6692 to inquire about the program. Once the Sept. 1 self-certification deadline has passed, NDA will begin mailing vouchers for the NDM to producers, probably around mid-September. Allocations of the product will be based on herd size, recommended USDA rations, and the overall amount of NDM available to Nebraska. Instructions on how to use the vouchers will be included in the mailing. For more information on the 2004 NDM Livestock Feed Initiative, visit www.agr.state.ne.us or www.droughtcentral.org.
