Wilkerson given Arp Award from nursery, landscape groupTexas Dr. Don Wilkerson, Texas Cooperative Extension horticulturist, was given the Arp Award recently by the Texas Nursery and Landscape Association. The award is named for a former leading nursery in Arp to recognize those whose service to the industry exemplify not only dedication but the highest in ethical and business values, according to the nursery industry association. Wilkerson, who joined Extension more than 20 years ago, has been instrumental in creating the horticultural gardens at Texas A&M. The citation noted Wilkerson's "dedication to working with the industry through the educational programs" of the association. "Dr. Wilkerson has served this industry by finding and nurturing students beyond just teaching them in the classroom," the award read. "He has made it a point to help students make contacts and find mentors within the industry. Many people teach; true educators take the time to help their students make these kinds of contact." Wilkerson has served on the association's Education Committee, helped teach the Master Certified Nursery Professional Course and planned numerous educational seminars. He received his bachelor's in 1976 from Arkansas State University, his master's in 1978 from the University of Arkansas, and his doctorate in 1981 from Louisiana State University, all in horticulture.
