Wheat progressing thanks to weather, moistureKansas Statewide during the week ending April 11 there were 5.0 days suitable for fieldwork, and during that time topsoil moisture was rated 11 percent very short, 19 percent short, 62 percent adequate, and 8 percent surplus, according to the Kansas Agricultural Statistics Service, April 12. Subsoil moisture was rated 26 percent very short, 23 percent short, 46 percent adequate, and 5 percent surplus. Forty-nine percent of the Wheat is jointed, compared to 35 percent last year and 38 percent for the five-year average. Wheat condition is rated 11 percent very poor, 19 percent poor, 32 percent fair, 31 percent good, and 7 percent excellent. Wheat freeze damage reports indicate 71 percent of the Wheat has not been damaged, 21 percent with light damage, 6 percent with moderate damage, and 2 percent with severe damage. Wind damage assessments indicate 66 percent of the Wheat with no damage, 25 percent with light damage, 7 percent with moderate damage, and 2 percent with severe damage. Insect reports indicate 68 percent with no infestation, 23 percent with light infestation, 7 percent with moderate infestation, and 2 percent with severe infestation. Alfalfa weevils have become a problem in some areas of the State. Some spraying is taking place. Disease reports indicate 81 percent with no presence, 18 percent with light presence, and 1 percent with moderate presence. Eighty-four percent of oats have been planted, compared with 92 percent last year and 87 percent for the five-year average.
