Weather helps fieldwork beginNew Mexico There were 5.2 days suitable for fieldwork during the week ending April 4, and farmers spent the week irrigating and planting chile and cotton, according to the New Mexico Agricultural Statistics Serivce, April 5. There was 3 percent light wind damage. Alfalfa conditions were 1 percent poor, 62 percent fair, 25 percent good, and 12 percent excellent. Winter Wheat conditions were listed as 13 percent very poor, 27 percent poor, 42 percent fair, and 18 percent good. Percent of Wheat being grazed dropped to 24 percent from 42 percent as ranchers are pulling cattle off the fields. Cotton planting has begun and farmers are 6 percent complete. Lettuce conditions were mostly good to excellent. Chile was reported at 73 percent planted and in mostly good condition. Onions were reported in mostly good condition. Ranchers spent the week mending fences, supplementing feed, and moving cattle off alfalfa and Wheat pasture. Cattle conditions were 27 percent poor, 38 percent fair, 34 percent good, and 1 percent excellent. Sheep conditions were 3 percent very poor, 36 percent poor, 40 percent fair, and 21 percent good. Range and pasture conditions were 30 percent very poor, 41 percent poor, 25 percent fair, 2 percent good, and 2 percent excellent. Date: 4/8/04
