Veneman names members to national potato boardSecretary of Agriculture Ann M. Veneman recently appointed 34 producer members to serve on the U.S. Department of Agriculture's National Potato Promotion Board. "I am pleased that these individuals have agreed to serve on the National Potato Promotion Board," said Veneman. "Their knowledge and experience will greatly assist the program." Newly appointed producer members are: Ronald R. Lehr Jr. of Bakersfield, Calif; Virginia K. Myers of Center, Colo.; David E. Radtke of Monte Vista, Colo.; Jeffery O. Gibson of Heyburn, Idaho; William J. Hartman of Parma, Idaho; Stanley C. Searle of Idaho Falls, Idaho; Thomas H. Qualey of Sherman Mills, Maine; Steven M. Whited of Bridgewater Maine; Wayne A. Leep of Shelbyville, Mich.; and Everitt D. Foust, Moiese, Mont. Also newly appointed as producer members are: Jason D. Yazzie of Bloomfield, N.M.; Bryan W. Beck of Tionesta, Pa.; Nelson Y. Cox of Warden, Wash.; Tony B. Czebotar of Warden, Wash.; Michael M. Pink of Basin City, Wash.; and importer Sanjiv Kakkar of Princeton Junction, N.J. Reappointed producer members are: Mark J. Fannuchi of Bakersfield, Calif; Ed J. Staunton of Tulelake, Calif.; Philip E. Smartt of Lamar, Colo.; Eric P. Blaser of Rexburg, Idaho; Willie A. Heward of Burley, Idaho; Jack C. These appointments are effective immediately and end Feb. 28, 2007. Also newly appointed as producer members are: Randy L. Hardy of Oakely, Idaho and Virginia L. Blackman of Klamath Falls, Ore. These appointments are effective immediately and end Feb. 28, 2005. The newly appointed producer member for the term beginning immediately and ending on Feb. 28, 2006 is Helen J. Lammey of Caldwell, Idaho. Authorized under the 1971 Potato Research and Promotion Act, the National Potato Promotion Board is composed of producers, importers and a public member appointed by the secretary of agriculture. Producer members are nominated at state and local producer meetings and by mail ballot. Each state is entitled to at least one producer member, and additional members are allotted on the basis of the volume of production. Importer members are nominated by importers, and the number of members is related to the volume of imports up to a maximum of five importer members. The potato board administers an industry funded national research and promotion program to increase U.S. exports and domestic potato consumption. Date: 4/8/04
