Valentine rancher to be honored by Block and BridleNebraska Valentine rancher and banker Frank J. Sibert will be honored as a new member of the University of Nebraska Block and Bridle Hall of Fame. Sibert will be honored at the Block and Bridle Club and animal science department's annual honors banquet April 23. Tickets to the banquet, which will be at 6:30 p.m. at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln East Union, cost $15 and can be purchased in advance by contacting the department at 402-472-6478 or 402-472-3571. The club's annual hall of fame honor goes to people who have made significant contributions to Nebraska agriculture through leadership, service, youth projects and community activities. Sibert has served the livestock industry in many capacities, beginning as an assistant county Extension agent in Dawson County in 1952. Sibert was an agricultural loan officer at the Stockyards Bank in Omaha. He purchased the Rolling Stone Ranch in Valentine in 1975 and moved there in 1977. During the next 20 years he was active in the ranching business and also served the state's livestock industry in a number of capacities. He led a group of investors that purchased the old Valentine Livestock Auction and replaced it with a modern, efficient facility, completed in 2003. As chairman of the Nebraska Cattlemen's Research and Education Foundation Board, Sibert led efforts to establish an endowed professorship chair in the animal science department. That $200,000 fund provides an annual $10,000 stipend to a professor who is chosen as the Nebraska Cattle Industry Professor. Sibert's youth activities include providing college scholarships to high school seniors from the Sandhills. He and his wife, Shirley, established an endowment fund with the Nebraska Cattlemen's Foundation that provides an annual scholarship of $1,000 to a selected student. Other awards presented at the banquet will include animal science department scholarships and student awards in the Block and Bridle. Judging teams also are honored. The animal science department is part of the university's Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources. Date: 4/5/04
