UW experts to speak at animal, human health forumWyoming Frank Galey, dean of the University of Wyoming's College of Agriculture, and Professor Elizabeth Williams of the Department of Veterinary Sciences will be featured speakers at the "Outlook 2004" Forum April 14 and 15 in Casper focusing on how animal and human health issues affect Wyoming and the U.S. economy. Galey, former head of veterinary sciences at UW, is also chairman of the governor's new Wyoming Brucellosis Coordination Team. Williams first characterized infectious chronic wasting disease in deer and elk and is considered an international expert on the illness. Their topic, presented along with Wyoming State Veterinarian Jim Logan, will be "Animal Health and Infectious Diseases: The Past, Present and Future." They will discuss anthrax, avian flu, brucellosis, chronic wasting disease, bovine spongiform encephalopathy ("mad cow" disease), monkey pox, West Nile virus and scrapie. The two-day forum at the Parkway Plaza is being hosted by the Wyoming Business Alliance and the Wyoming Heritage Foundation. Sponsors include the Wyoming Bankers Association, Wyoming Chamber of Commerce Executives, the Wyoming Economic Development Association and the Wyoming Stock Growers Association. Other presentation topics will focus on accommodating public opinion with state and local economic needs related to national parks, the human health implications of animal diseases, the direct and indirect costs of such diseases to producers and communities, wildlife and producer perspectives and controversies, and regional economic assessments. "Beyond Brucellosis: Killing Bison Forever is Unpalatable" will be the topic of a talk by Valerie Ragan, assistant deputy administrator for the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service in Washington, D.C. Representatives of the Yellowstone Center for Resources, the Wyoming Department of Health, the Wyoming Department of Agriculture, the Wyoming Division of Economic Analysis, the Wyoming Business Council, the Wyoming Economic Development Association, the Wyoming Outfitters Association, the Wyoming Outdoor Council, the Wyoming Stock Growers Association, the Wyoming Wildlife Association, the Converse County New Development Organization and Sportsman for Fish and Wildlife of Wyoming will also present information.
