Bill Hogue's Apple Goodie

Ingredients:
1-1/2 cups sugar
1-1/2 cups water
1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
6 - 10 drops red food coloring
3 tablespoons margarine
2 cups sifted all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
2/3 cup shortening
1/2 cup milk
6 medium apples, pared, cored, sliced








Directions: Combine sugar, water, spices and food coloring, bring to a boil. Remove from heat, add butter. Sift together dry ingredients, cut in shortening till mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Add milk all at once and stir just until flour is moistened. On lightly floured surface, roll into rectangle about 1/4 inch thick. Cut solid piece and place in 9x13 inch glass pan. Cut remaining dough into 1/2 inch strips. Place apples over dough and top with remaining strips in criss cross pattern. Cover with syrup mixture and liberally sprinkle with cinnamon sugar. Bake at 375°F for 50 to 55 minutes.

Notes: Serve with vanilla ice cream. We love the aroma of this baking in our kitchen.
