Grandma Bozarth's Mahogany Cake

Ingredients:
2/3 cup shortening
2 cups sugar
3 eggs
1 cup buttermilk, plus
3 tablespoons buttermilk, divided
1 tablespoon soda
1 teaspoon vanilla
1-3/4 cup flour
1/2 cup hot coffee
1/2 cup cocoa
1/3 cup butter
2/3 cup brown sugar
3 tablespoons milk
1 cup powdered sugar






Directions: Dissolve cocoa in hot coffee and set aside to cool. Mix soda in the 3 tablespoons of buttermilk, set aside. Cream shortening and sugar. Add beaten eggs. Add flour and the one cup of buttermilk alternately. Mix in the soda with buttermilk. Then add the chocolate coffee mixture and vanilla. Bake in a 9X12 inch pan at 350°F for about 30 minutes or until tests done. To prepare the caramel frosting, mix 1/3 cup butter, 2/3 cup brown sugar, 3 tablespoons milk and 1 cup powdered sugar. Melt butter in saucepan. Stir in brown sugar. Boil and stir over low heat 2 minutes. Stir in milk, bring to a boil, stirring constantly. Cool to lukewarm.
